Tour of Savaii

Two ITEP Senior Missionary Couples came over to Savaii to spend two days with us for a quick tour of Savaii.  Here are just a few of the highlights:

 Arrival


6:00AM  Ferry from Upolu to Savaii. This ride takes about 90 minutes. This is the ferry going the other direction in the early morning.

First stop,  Olemoe Falls 



 

Black Sand Beach


Lava has been being worn down for centuries to make this black sand beach.  It is so fine, that it is like flour.  When you get into the water the sand gets everywhere, and I mean everywhere.

 The Blow Holes

 The edge of this part of the island is all volcanic.  The water has worked its way into all the small holes and cracks to produce these great blow
holes.

If you drop a coconut into the hole just before it blows, the coconut will be pushed up several hundred feet into the air.  The trick is to listen for the water coming through the rock, drop the coconut, run like crazy so you don't get wet, and then don't get hit with the coconut when it is falling back to earth. 

 Canopy Walk

This is not quite the same as other canopy walks that we have been on.  You are above the trees and it is a beautiful view.  The walking surface is aluminum ladders tied end to end with wood 2X8's placed on them so you don't fall through the rungs, all suspended by cables strung through the trees.  The netting on the sides is old and rotten.

This is the walkway to get down from the observation deck.  It is all attached to a hugh Banyan tree by the same tie-downs I use to hold my tractor onto my trailer. You are not allowed to drill into the tree.

Snorkeling was Unbelievable

I have never seen so many fish and so many different colors since out first trip to Hawaii

We will definitely be coming back here many times before we go home.

Cheryle got to swim with the turtles again.

Yes these are real live turtles in the ocean that want to be fed.

You don't want to mess with him or he will hiss at you.










Lava Fields 1905 erruption

This was a church that the lava flowed through on its way from the mountains to the sea.

 COPRA

Some of the Samoans take the coconuts and dry the over slow burning fires.  They then take the meat out of the shell and squeeze the oil out of it.  The oil is a very prized commodity.
